Two-part CNA documentary explores 182-years of horse racing heritage

 

Explore the rich heritage of the Singapore Turf Club (STC) in the two-part CNA documentary, “In The Grandstand”. Through three story arcs – milestones, impact, and people – the series  looks at how STC shaped professional horse racing, contributed to nation-building, and left an enduring legacy.

 

Featuring diverse voices, including key stakeholders who played pivotal roles in shaping STC’s history, the series highlights the Club’s influence on Singapore’s social fabric. Prominent figures like Deborah Barker SC, daughter of the late EW Barker, Singapore’s first law minister, share their perspectives and memories.

Episode 1: The Ties That Bind 

The first episode of “In The Grandstand” delves into the Club’s rich history and collective memories. Samiah Bte Hassan, an Administrative Officer from STC’s Marketing, Communications and Partnerships Division, recounts her experience growing up at the Bukit Timah Racecourse, highlighting memorable events such as the late Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1972 and 2006. Magdalene Tan, Singapore’s first local female jockey, reflects on her trailblazing journey in a male-dominated sport.

Episode 2: Building a Legacy

This second episode explores the challenges and triumphs in the construction of Kranji Racecourse. Architect-in-charge Hoong Bee Lok and R Jayaraju, STC’s Head of Tracks provide insights into the design and maintenance of the racecourse, while John Davidson, STC’s Chief Racing Officer, highlights the state-of-the-art horse racing facilities.  

Episode 1 and 2 of “In The Grandstand” premiered on CNA at 9pm on 22 and 29 November 2024 respectively.
