SINGAPORE TURF CLUB “CAPTURING OUR BEAUTY” PHOTO COMPETITION: A VISUAL CELEBRATION OF HERITAGE AND LEGACY
The Singapore Turf Club’s (STC) photo competition, "Capturing Our Beauty," has seen active participation from the community, with a variety of submissions from local photo enthusiasts. More than 200 submissions were received, with participants showcasing a wide range of unique perspectives and creative interpretations on the three themes of architecture, flora and fauna, and racing. The photo competition concluded on 30 August.
The initiative saw members of the public capturing the heritage and legacy of STC, a cultural and sporting institution with historical significance, through photography. It is part of the ongoing homestretch celebrations leading up to the Grand Singapore Gold Cup (SGC), which will take place on 5 October.
Two participants shared their motivations for entering the competition and their experiences.
Retiree Mr Steven Liew, 66, also a freelance photographer and arts and craft teacher shared, " This competition has allowed me to capture and share the unique blend of nature and architecture that defines this place. The photo walk was a journey of discovery for me, revealing hidden gems and reminding us of the rich heritage that resides within STC."
Echoing these sentiments, Ms Farrah Sayyed, 37, freelance photographer said, "Exploring STC through my lens has been an extraordinary experience. This competition is not just about capturing beautiful images, it's about telling the story of STC, its rich heritage and its place in our cultural fabric."
As part of the initiative, STC held eight photo walks from May to June which offered participants three different experiences, namely architecture, flora and fauna, and racing. The photo walks saw overwhelming public demand to learn about the Club’s heritage through a different lens.
Mr Tan Ren Keat, Assistant Manager, Corporate Marketing at Singapore Turf Club and the project lead for the “Capturing the Beauty” initiative reflected on the impact of the programme: “The photo walks and photo competition invited the community to capture the Club’s rich heritage, and it has been inspiring to see the beauty and legacy preserved through their lenses. We also adapted this initiative for employees, ensuring everyone could contribute to preserving these special memories.”
Esteemed influencer-photographers Mr Lee Aik Soon and Mr Lee Yik Keat acted as guides and mentors for photo walk participants, sharing photography tips as well as insights on the vantage points and significance of the subject matter along the routes.
Sharing his perspective, Aik Soon said, “STC is a photographer's dream. Its blend of natural beauty and architectural grandeur offers endless opportunities for compelling images. This competition is a meaningful initiative that encourages us to look beyond the surface and capture the essence of STC.”
Sharing his delight at leading the photo walks, Yik Keat said, “This competition is a wonderful way to celebrate and preserve the unique beauty of STC. It's been a joy to guide the participants on this journey and watch them uncover the many facets of STC's beauty and heritage.”
Winning entries will be eligible for cash prizes of between $50 and $500 and will be displayed at a photo exhibition to be launched at the upcoming Grand SGC on 5 October.
Results of the competition will be announced on 30 September.
