The Singapore Turf Club (STC) today celebrated 182 years of horse-racing heritage in Singapore with the staging of the Grand Singapore Gold Cup (SGC). The historic race meeting served as the culminating event of STC’s Homestretch celebrations, with Trainer David Kok, Owner Lim Chong Sam and Jockey Muzi Yeni clinching the coveted $1.38 million prize for the Grand SGC.
Recapping his win, Jockey Muzi Yeni said, ‘You don’t come and ride if you don’t believe in it. I chose to come, so I’ve got to believe I can win it. I would like to thank trainer Mr David Kok for bringing me to ride in Singapore, and I got to say that riding at 50kg helped me get the win. I needed a winner and I’m so happy I got it. It was a pleasure to ride at the Grand Singapore Gold Cup.’
Trainer David Kok said, ‘I know my horse has ability and he can stay. I always wanted to win (the Singapore Gold Cup), and finally, I won the last one. I knew my horse is in very good condition and he could be a top three finish.’
In all, there were 148 entries competing across the 10 races, with a prize pool totaling more than $2 million. The average field size at the Grand SGC increased to 14.8, as compared to 10 to 11 on average.
The event was graced by the Speaker of Parliament Mr Seah Kian Peng, who presented the prizes to the winning connections.
